Understanding different types of PICMicro's (by Tim Buttars)
I haven't used microprossors before but have I some PLC experience. I am building fairly simple control circuits needing several inputs & outputs and several internal timers. I think that the PIC16F628A would work for me but I don't know the difference between the variations (PDIP, SOIC, SSOP, QFN) Can someone explain what these mean?
Thanks,
Tim

Hi,
That seem to be pretty new for you... so... welcome to the fascinating world of electronic !!!
First your should say microcontroller NOT microprocessor... microcontroller integrate; Microprocessor, Memory, I/O, UART, ADC... so basically a computer in a chip
for your information...
PDIP = Plastic Dual Inline Package
SOIC = Small Outline Integrated Circuit
SSOP = Shrink Small Outline Package
QFN = Quad Flat No leads
DFN = Dual Flat No leads
For all "homebrew" circuit stick with the DIP or PDIP components... all the rest are to small for hobbyist, but perfect for large volume production and space saving...
Hope this help !

Just forgot to say that (PDIP, SOIC, SSOP, QFN) is the package of the chip, there are 2 type of technology
-Through hole (DIP)
and
-Surface mount **SMD** (SOIC, SSOP, QFN)

Thanks alot Max, this was very helpful.
